1. Prepare All the Items You Need

  • Mold box. This box is equivalent to a frame. Its main function is to frame the liquid silicone when it is poured onto the prototype. After the silicone has cured, you can take out the square silicone mold printed with the outline of the prototype object from the box.
  • Mold release agent. Whether and how much mold release agent is needed depends on the material surface of the prototype. If the surface of the prototype is relatively rough, it will be much more difficult to demold, so more demolding agent should be prepared. If the surface of the prototype is smooth and fine, less or no mold release agent can be used.
  • Hot melt glue gun. The function of the hot melt glue gun is to weld and fix the prototype item to the bottom of the mold box.  In this way, when the liquid silicone is poured into the mold box, it can prevent the prototype items from being too light and floating around.

2. Determine the Type of Silicone Mold You Want to Make

One-piece silicone molds are only suitable for components with simple structures and flat surfaces.  If the surface of your original has deep depressions or protrusions, it is not suitable for making an integrated mold.  Otherwise, the finished silicone mold will be very difficult to demold.  Although silicone is elastic, it is still possible to cause tearing when separating your silicone mold from the mold box.  If what you are going to do is something with a simple structure, such as round small pendants or decorative items with smooth surface undulations, a one-piece silicone mold would better meet your requirements.

The manufacturing process of a one-piece silicone mold is relatively simpler.  You just need to mix the silicone well, pour it into the mother mold, and wait for it to cure directly.

  • Two-piece silicone mold

Split molds divide the mold cavity into two or more pieces, somewhat similar to the working principle of injection molding. Its core is to design the parting line. You need to cut along the most concealed position of the prototype item, such as the junction of two planes or the bottom of a depression. The mold is divided into two parts, forming a refillable 3D cavity. The advantage of doing this is that demolding is convenient. Even if your prototype has hooks or deep grooves, you can still separate the mold along the parting line and easily take out the prototype. Moreover, it is simpler for you to replicate the prototype using a split mold than an integrated one. It’s just that making split-type molds is a bit more troublesome.

If you are making a batch of objects with relatively three-dimensional surfaces, many grooves, and complex shapes, a split-type mold is more suitable. In addition, the split-type mold requires more splicing work. During pouring, it is necessary to ensure that the two molds fit tightly together.

3. The Steps for Making Silicone Molds

3.1 One-piece silicone mold:

  • Get your prototype items ready. This original is the object you want to replicate. Its surface must be clean and free of oil stains. You can wipe it several times with an alcohol cotton pad to ensure there is no dust or grease residue. If you don’t have a prototype, you can use stereolithography resin (SLA) and print one with a 3D printer. For silicone molds that require accurate cavities, smooth surfaces, and stable dimensions, CNC machining is often used to produce mold inserts, prototype molds, and precision tooling components.

Next, handle the original surface. Spray a thin layer of mold release agent on the surface of your original mold. After spraying, let it dry for ten minutes. This step is to prepare for the subsequent demolding to prevent the silicone from sticking to the original mold and being unable to be removed. The mold release agent can be chosen as a spray or vaseline. Vaseline is viscous and easy to fix. Or a mixture of some wax and oil, or gel.

  • Making mold boxes. Use coated medium-density fiberboard. Simple prefabricated plastic containers will also do. As long as the surface has no holes and the bottom is flat, it will be fine. To ensure a smooth demolding process, you can also apply a layer of mold release agent inside the mold box.
  • Prepare silicone. You need to mix the liquid silica gel with corn starch in proportion as per the instructions.  Then, use the stirring rod to stir slowly in one direction.  If there are bubbles inside after mixing, you can let it stand for a period of time to allow the small bubbles to float naturally, or you can use a handheld electric sanding machine or other vibration devices to remove the bubbles.
  • Pouring silicone. First, use a hot-melt glue gun to fix the prototype to the bottom of the mold box, leaving enough extra space around it to ensure that the silicone can fully cover your prototype when poured in.  Then slowly pour in the silicone until it completely submerges your prototype.  By the way, I still have one more thing to remind you of.  Don’t choose a too small mold box.  At least ensure that the thickness of the silicone after pouring is 1cm.  Next, the mold box can be placed at room temperature to stand and cure.  The curing time mainly depends on the type and brand of silicone, so it is also necessary to read the product manual.  If you’re really not sure, just leave it alone for a day.  One day is enough to solidify
  • Silicone demolding. This should be a very simple step for you. Just peel the silicone out of the sealed box. Silicone is very elastic. Don’t worry. You won’t tear it.
  • Replicate your prototype with other materials. After this silicone mold is completed, you can use it to replicate your prototype.  Just pour the material you want to make into the prepared silicone mold, then let it dry, and the replication will be successful.  Remember to spray some mold release agent on the surface of the mold as well.  This way, it will be easier to demold.  Now go and create boldly.  This mold can be used many times.

3.2 Two-piece silicone mold:

Two-piece silicone molds are more troublesome to make. The two molds need to be made in two separate processes. The following are the detailed steps:

  • Place the prototype and apply the mold release agent. (Refer to the production of integrated molds)
  • Determine the parting line. Draw a smooth line on the original mold with a pencil, trying to avoid patterns, depression, or sharp areas (such as the base of the cup handle), and choose a smooth transition position (such as the connection between the cup body and the base). This line should be straight. When you draw it, you can compare it with a ruler to ensure that the two halves fit tightly after parting the mold.
  • Choose another material, put it in the silicone mold box. In this article, I will take clay as an example.  You place the clay inside the mold box and then put the prototype in.  Let the clay submerge half of the prototype while exposing the other half.
  • Pour the prepared silicone into the mold box. Now you can pour the silicone you have prepared into the box and completely cover the exposed half of the prototype. This layer of silicone will serve as half of the final mold.
  • Remove half of the mold. After the silicone you poured in has cured, take the silicone mold, prototype, and clay out of the box. Clean up the dirt, and then your first silicone mold will be made.
  • Put the mold and prototype back into the mold box. Clean the clay off the surface of half of the mold and the prototype that you have already made, and put them back into the mold box. This time, we need to change the direction of the prototype to facilitate the making of the next mold. I’m sure you can understand. Apply another layer of mold release agent on the surface of the prototype and the existing mold.
  • Pour in the silicone. Just as before, slowly pour the silicone back into the mold box to fully cover the prototype. After the silicone above has solidified and formed again, you can obtain another silicone mold.
