Silicone Guide: Composition, Uses, Benefits & Selection Tips

Nowadays, an increasing number of industries are turning to silicone. If you are planning to customize silicone products for your brand, understanding its composition, uses and benefits, as well as how to choose the right type, will be beneficial to your business. This article will explain everything you might want to know about this.

What Is Silicone Made Of?

What Is Silicone Made Of

Silicone is a polymer material with silicon at its core. It is usually made from quartz sand through a series of chemical processes. Then, products in your desired shapes can be made through processes such as compression molding, injection molding, and extrusion.

It can appear as a transparent or translucent colloid, granules, or solid foam. It is commonly used in the fields of mother and baby products, kitchenware, electronic products, medical devices, etc.

Key Types of Silicone Materials

Key Types of Silicone Materials

Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR)

Before processing, this silicone material has a fluid consistency similar to honey. And it is manufactured through injection molding. The entire production process can be highly automated, which requires minimal manual intervention. With its extremely low shrinkage rate (less than 0.1%) and ability to accurately reproduce mold details, it provides exceptional precision.

It is non-toxic and odorless,  which makes it the ideal choice for sectors with high safety standards, such as maternal and infant care and medical applications. It is often referred to as “food-grade” or “medical-grade” silicone.

If you need automated mass production and complex product structures, LSR is suitable. Mold costs are relatively high.

Solid Silicone Rubber (HCR)

Solid silicone rubber appears as a solid block resembling modeling clay before processing. It feels firm to the touch and lacks fluidity. It is manufactured through a series of processes including mixing, cutting, vulcanization, trimming, and secondary vulcanization. The automation and precision of HCR are not as high as those of LSR. It cures relatively quickly,  which typically takes only tens of seconds to a few minutes.

HCR offers excellent resistance to high and low temperatures (–50°C to +300°C), chemical corrosion, and electrical insulation. As a result, solid silicone rubber is the material of choice for many industrial and consumer products.

For your semi-automated production in medium to large batches, HCR is ideal for low-precision, large-sized products with simple structures. Mold costs are relatively low.

Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV)

Silicone rubber does not require heating or pressurization; it cures on its own at room temperature (15–30°C) from a liquid or paste into a rubber-like solid. RTV is primarily divided into single-component and two-component types. RTV-1 cures upon exposure to air after opening; RTV-2 requires mixing components A and B in the correct ratio before curing. Curing takes several hours to several days.

RTV is resistant to both cold and heat, so it can be used for a long time in temperatures ranging from -50°C to +200°C. It is also waterproof and stain-resistant, with excellent shock absorption, cushioning, and sealing properties. You can see it used in electronic potting, building sealing, and mold manufacturing.

If your product requires on-site curing or flexible small-batch production, RTV is a good choice.

Benefits of Silicone

Benefits of Silicone

High-temperature resistant / Low-temperature resistant

Silicone can be called the “king of temperature tolerance” in the rubber industry. It retains its elasticity between -50 and 200°C. Some special high-temperature-resistant formulations (such as phenyl silicone rubber) can withstand temperatures ranging from -100 to 300°C.

For example, when a car engine starts at -20°C in winter, its silicone hoses will not crack because of the sudden temperature change.

So if your products require stable performance in both high- and low-temperature environments, you can consider silicone.

Safe and non-toxic

You need to know that whether silicone is safe depends on its purity. Lower-purity industrial silicone typically contains impurities and has a pungent odor, which makes it unsuitable for use in food or maternal and infant products.

In contrast, high-quality food-grade and medical-grade silicone is generally safe and non-toxic, and complies with standards such as FDA and LFGB. These silicones are typically free of BPA and phthalates and do not release harmful substances.

Highly flexible

Silicone is highly flexible. Even after repeated bending, stretching, and compression, it can still return to its original shape. The flexibility of silicone can be adjusted by modifying the formulation, such as by adding silica, incorporating silicone oil, or adjusting the cross-linking density. So you can design silicone with the appropriate level of flexibility to meet your specific needs.

For example, ultra-soft silicone (Shore A 10–20) for prosthetic liners; medium-soft silicone (Shore A 30–50) for pacifiers and O-rings; and slightly harder silicone (Shore A 60–80) for keyboard keys and automotive gaskets.

Waterproof / Insulating

Silicone products are widely used in electronics and outdoor components because they have excellent water resistance and insulation properties. Their water absorption rate is extremely low (less than 0.1%), and even if left submerged in water for extended periods, their weight remains unchanged. As a result, they are frequently used in kitchen and bathroom sealants and as O-rings for waterproof flashlights.

Furthermore, silicone has a volume resistivity ranging from 10¹⁴ to 10¹⁶ Ω·cm, which means it is virtually non-conductive. It can replace insulating ceramics and plastics in many applications. For example, heat-shrinkable cable terminations and connectors utilize silicone’s elasticity and insulating properties.

FAQ

FAQ

Can I Customize My Brand Logo on Silicone Products?

Yes. This detail can enhance your brand’s recognition. We can provide various logo customization methods for silicone products, which include screen printing, embossing, and laser engraving. We can send free samples so you can choose the printing method that best suits your brand before proceeding with bulk production.

Can Food-grade Silicone and Medical-grade Silicone Be Used Interchangeably?

No, they cannot be substituted arbitrarily. Medical-grade silicone complies with the ISO 10993 standard, whereas food-grade silicone does not meet this requirement. Furthermore, medical-grade silicone costs two to three times as much as food-grade silicone, so using medical-grade silicone in place of food-grade silicone would result in unnecessary costs.

Can I Customize the Color of the Silicone for My Product?

Yes. Silicone can be formulated to match almost any color you specify.  We can match colors using Pantone or RAL color codes through the computer.  Color deviation can be kept within 1.0. Before mass production, we can provide you with a silicone sample in your custom color for your approval.

When Is Silicone not Recommended?

Silicone has excellent performance, but using it in the wrong applications can have the opposite effect. It is not suitable as a material for products requiring load-bearing structures, industrial high-temperature equipment (operating at temperatures above 300°C), or low-cost disposable products.

Is Silicone Suitable for One-piece Molding?

Yes. Silicone has excellent flow properties, particularly LSR, which can fill even complex geometries. Additionally, silicone’s elasticity makes it easy to demold from complex structures. Compared to traditional assembled designs, one-piece molding with silicone eliminates the risk of leaks.
