What Is an Industry Silicone Roller and How Does It Work?
![]()
Basic Structure of a Silicone Roller
In industry, the silicone roller is a transmission or processing component and consists of two parts: a silicone roller covering and an inner roller core that are bonded together by physical or chemical methods.
Roller cores serve as supports and transmission functions, determining the load that your roller can withstand while affecting runtime stability. The outer silicone layer contacts your material and is responsible for pressing, feeding, or guiding, etc. In other words, you need to pay attention to both parts during selections. When replacing an existing roller, don’t look at the silicone covering alone. The new roller also needs to match your original core.
Working Principle
Silicone is a highly elastic material. During operation, the silicone layer will undergo elastic deformation under pressure to adhere to the uneven surface. Then it restores after the pressure is released. This is also the biggest difference between silicone rollers and hard metal rollers. For materials like thin films and electronic components, silicone rollers can help you reduce surface scratches through a flexible contact.
The silicone has natural non-stick properties to prevent many adhesives and grease from sticking to the rollers. So it is suitable for you to use in glue coating and facial ice rollers for skincare.
What Makes Legensilico Silicone Rollers Precise and Reliable?
Degumming and uneven pressure may be the main problems that trouble you in the long term. Based on over 20 years of experience in silicone molding and precision machining, Legensilico, through a closed-loop process, ensures that each silicone roller delivered to you has strict quality control and small tolerances.
Chemical Vulcanization Bonding
The reason for delamination is often an inappropriate combination between the silicone layer and the roller core. Instead of traditional surface adhesive bonding, Legensilico will first sandblast the metal roller core to remove rust and activate the interface before using a special primer. During the thermal vulcanization process, the silicone layer forms a stable bond with the metal substrate, reducing the risk of delamination under high temperature.
HCR Overmolding vs. LSR Injection
We have two molding methods to flexibly match your types of silicone rollers. HCR/HTV Overmolding is suitable for industrial rollers with a large outer diameter and a thick rubber layer to offer excellent tear and abrasion resistance. LSR Injection Molding is designed for smaller, more refined silicone rollers like the beauty ice silicone rollers, its zero-void material density and high dimensional repeatability.
CNC Precision Grinding and Dynamic Balancing
After the silicone rollers are formed, they will undergo precision grinding with our CNC-dedicated rubber grinding machine to control the radial runout. Depending on your actual needs, the TIR can be controlled within ≤0.01–0.03 mm, ensuring smooth pressing during high-speed operation. If your high-speed applications have linear speeds >100 m/min, we support dynamic balancing to prevent vibration and wear caused by high-speed rotation.
Flat vs. Grooved vs. Textured Silicone Rollers
![]()
| Roller Profile | Key Features | Typical Uses | Best Suited For |
| Flat Silicone Roller | Continuous & smooth surface | Lamination, film pressing, heat sealing | Uniform, mark-free & bubble-free pressure. |
| Grooved Silicone Roller | Spiral, herringbone, or mesh grooves | Glue coating, traction, air venting | Fluid distribution, air discharge & anti-wrinkling. |
| Textured Silicone Roller | Controlled roughness or matte finish | Embossing, non-slip feeding, matte coating | Increasing friction, anti-sticking & matte surface effects. |
If you are doing regular lamination, we advise you to start with smooth silicone rollers for pressing flatness. If there is slippage or material misalignment during trial operation, move to a grooved or special texture. But don’t choose a rougher roller surface just to increase friction, because it may damage your film and affect the coating effect.
For consumer silicone rollers, you can customize based on a specific function. For example, Face ice rollers suit a smooth and flat surface. Lint rollers and garlic peelers require texture to provide sufficient friction.
Silicone Roller vs. Rubber Roller: Which Is Better?
| Dimension | Silicone Roller | Rubber / PU Roller |
| Temperature Resistance | Continuous -50°C to +200°C; higher with custom formulas | NBR ~120°C, PU <80°C (softens under heat), EPDM up to 150°C |
| Elasticity | High elasticity, low compression set, fast rebound | Good elasticity, but prone to deformation under long pressure |
| Chemical Resistance | Non-stick, UV/ozone resistant, resistant to some mild acids and alkalis; swells in strong solvents (toluene, acetone) | Material-dependent: NBR (oil resistant), EPDM (weather/acid/alkali resistant) |
| Wear Resistance | Moderate; improvable via thicker coating or formulation | High |
| Cost | Higher initial investment | Cost-effective for ambient general uses |
If your existing equipment has used rubber rollers, it is not necessary to replace the entire set of rollers. We advise you to confirm whether the metal roller core is in good condition, and then you can re-cover it with suitable silicone layers. If the inner core itself is already damaged, this needs pre-processing or replacement of the inner core.
Send your actual device data to us. Legensilico will assess the structure and match suitable silicone layers to reduce your replacement cost.
Silicone Roller Application Guide
![]()
Printing Applications
Printing rollers, hot stamping rollers, film Traction rollers, labeling rollers, etc., need moderate hardness, like 70 – 80 Shore A, and temperature resistance. Based on our vulcanization overmolding process for solid silicone (HCR), HCR silicone rollers are recommended to ensure the cleared edges of the hot stamping graphics are free of burrs.
Material Processing
In the process of gluing boards or pressing waterproof membranes, silicone rollers need contact adhesives or materials. We advise you to choose grooving rollers or micro-textured rollers made of medium-hardness silicone ( 50-60 Shore A) to achieve uniform adhesive application and air release, preventing wrinkles.
Industrial Manufacturing
Typical applications include PCB lamination rollers, cleanroom sticky rollers, and material conveying rollers, and so on. We support customized antistatic/conductive and PWIS-free silicone formulas to prevent electrostatic adsorption that damages your precision electronic components. For laminating sensitive components, silicone Shore A of 30-45 is recommended to provide sufficient cushion.
Medicine and Consumer Products
For personal care products like silicone ice rollers, we recommend LSR injection molding with a soft-matte or smooth finish to improve skin-friendly comfort. For medical and food contact rollers, such as food packaging sealing rollers and medical tubing traction rollers, tell us your compliance certification requirements to match the high-purity silicone formula.
Yes, but confirm the silicone formula first. Legensilico can adjust the formula to match your usage and product design. After processing, LSR has a stable chemical structure and is non-toxic, without BPA and plasticizers. For better care for sensitive skin, silicone materials that comply with FDA and LFGB food-grade/medical-grade safety standards are recommended.
You can use warm water and a neutral detergent in daily cleaning, then wipe the surface with a soft cloth. If you need to clean residue from industrial silicone rollers, use IPA for quick wipes, provided it is compatible with the material.
Please do not use metal brushes or sharp objects to scratch the roller surface. And avoid contact with strong acids/alkalis and solvents like toluene/acetone due to swelling.
After cleaning, store in a cool, dry place away from light. We can provide custom silicone brackets for placement to prevent deformation.
Custom mold making and first sample production are about 10-15 business days. After you have confirmed the sample, the regular bulk orders’ production cycle is typically 2-3 weeks. But the lead time depends on structural complexity, order quantity, machining accuracy, and other custom requirements.
- Provide existing samples or drawings to reduce repeat confirmations. Legensilico DFM assessments help you reduce trial and error.
- If the core is still usable, you can consider our re-covering service to save core machining costs.
- We will match the hardness and adhesive layer thickness according to your actual working conditions to avoid performance waste
- Confirm specifications for bulk orders in advance to reduce the costs of model changeovers
