Kitchen Utensils

If you are manufacturing kitchen contact products, such as heat-resistant gloves and baking molds because this involves high-temperature contact, like ovens and hot pans, and frequent contact with food.

For baking molds and heat-resistant gloves that come into direct contact with high temperatures, silicone rubber is the preferred material. Because it can withstand temperatures above 230 °C and is chemically inert, ensuring no harmful substances are released. Moreover, it is also easy to obtain FDA food-grade certification.

However, for household heat-resistant gloves that are only used to hold hot dishes and typically have a temperature below 100°C, TPE is a cost-effective alternative. TPE may soften at around 100 degrees, so it is necessary to check the heat deflection temperature of the specific TPE grade before use.

How to Distinguish TPE from Silicone Rubber?

There are 3 testing methods.

First, the combustion test. When silicone rubber burns, it produces white smoke and forms white powder; TPE burns with black smoke, has a smell of petroleum or plastic, and may melt and drip.

Second, the boiling water test. Put the raw materials you received in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes. The silicone rubber will remain basically unchanged; the TPE will become softer and lose its elasticity.

Third, stretching observation. Silicone rubber resists stretching and returns to its original shape quickly; TPE has a slower recovery rate and may undergo permanent deformation after repeated stretching.

Do TPE and Silicone Rubber Have Expiration Dates?

For raw materials, there are indeed expiration dates. TPE can be stored for 6 to 12 months, while silicone rubber can be kept for 12 months. If TPE absorbs moisture, becomes brittle, or loses its toughness, it has expired. An increase in viscosity and reduced fluidity of silicone rubber are also signs of its expiration.
